As the crisis of democracy deepens and genocidal violence spreads around the world, social movements continue to expand. As in the past, activism is and has been inextricably connected to culture-song, drama, literature, graphic arts and painting. This webinar will assess the role of music in building and sustaining social movements. Panelists will describe their experiences as performers, activists, and educators in reference to music and social movements. After brief commentary and performances by panelists, attendees will be invited to raise questions and share their experiences.
Panelists: Kristin Lems is an American musician, singer-songwriter, feminist, and author/educator in the field of teaching English as a Second Language. Hers songs on “The Theocracy” and “We Will Never Give Up” are classic. Doug Morris (Ph.D., Penn State) teaches in the world of critical pedagogy at West Chester University. He is a former jazz guitarist, a singer, a composer, and a performer of "people's songs." Dr. Morris has written about Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, and others in the tradition of "people's music”.
